Morning accident injures pickup driver

CONCORD TWP — A pickup was mangled this morning when it hit a concrete retaining wall for a drain on Oneida Valley Road.

The driver, Justin Fierst, 23, of Washington Township, was flown by medical helicopter to an unspecified hospital.

Raymond Fierst, the driver’s father, said his son was being treated for a possible concussion and cuts.

Chief Nick Grove of the North Washington Volunteer Fire Company said the driver was out of the vehicle and walking following the 5:46 a.m. wreck.

Grove said Fierst lost control at the crest of a hill in the southbound lane.

“He said he swerved to miss a deer,” Grove said.

He said the truck’s driver’s compartment was not damaged despite the bed nearly being torn off the cab.

Grove estimated the truck traveled 20 feet down the road after avoiding the deer and another 60 yards through the edge of a wooded area before stopping.

Raymond Fierst said his son was headed to work for Brayman Construction when the accident occurred.

The West Sunbury Volunteer Fire Department assisted North Washington at the scene.

Traffic along the road was restricted to one alternating lane. Crews cleared the scene at 7:26 a.m.
