Mars paying close attention to Indiana

ADAMS TWP — Scott Heinauer knows all about attention to detail.

This time last week, Mars' veteran football coach was preaching it following a season-opening loss to Franklin Regional. His team responded with a great week of practice, which led to a 64-7 drubbing of host Derry last Friday.

Now it is Indiana's chance to rebound. The Indians dropped a 31-0 decision at home to Franklin Regional and will visit the Mars Athletic Complex Friday in a battle of 1-1 Greater Allegheny Conference teams.

“It was just one of those games,” said Indiana coach Mark Zilinskas of last Friday's loss. “Franklin had so much momentum early (a 17-0 first-quarter lead), it made it really tough on us.”

Heinauer knows that Indiana is a better team than last week's score indicates.

“They fumbled the opening kickoff last week and also threw an early interception,” he said of the Indians. “Both turnovers led to touchdowns, but Indiana is a dangerous team. They have great athletes who we have to be concerned with. We need to score early.”

Indiana, which defeated Hampton 33-7 in Week 1, runs the wishbone offense and uses deception on most of its offensive plays.

Senior DeQuan West, who was the team's starting quarterback last year before missing the second half of the season with turf toe, is now a running back.

“He's a slasher with good vision, but also has some size to him (6-foot-1, 197 pounds),” said Zilinskas.

Now calling signals is senior Sean Thompson (6-4, 185), who, like the rest of the team, had a good start to the season, but struggled last week.

“On defense, you have to be ready for the dive back to get the ball, the pitch back, or the quarterback could just run it himself or pass it,” said Heinauer. “Our linebackers (John King, Jason Lozzi and Josh Schultheis) have to be patient and read their keys.”

Mars' offense has been sparked by a quick-strike passing attack, as senior quarterback Owen Nearhoof has thrown for 340 yards and three touchdowns in the first two games. His top targets are tight end Nolan Skirtich (six receptions for 141 yards) and wide receiver Travis Ganter (four for 184).

“Their contributions are much-needed,” Heinauer said. “They can both catch and run. Travis is very fast while Nolan has deceptive speed. They are a threat every time they touch the ball.”

Throw in Schultheis, a fullback who has 310 yards rushing on 39 carries, and the Planets' offense figures to give defensive coordinators headaches all season long.

“Hopefully, we can predict when they are going to pass,” said Zilinskas. “We do that by stopping the run.”

Mars defeated the Indians last year, 40-6.
