Chicora Elementary School lockdown was precautionary
CHICORA — Students and staff at Chicora Elementary School were on lockdown for nearly an hour this afternoon as a precautionary measure after staff learned a man who was going to pick up his child from the school might be armed.
Superintendent Eric Ritzert of the Karns City School District said a mother called the school about 12:15 p.m. and said her ex-husband would be coming to Chicora Elementary to pick up their child. She also told school officials he might be armed.
About 1 p.m., state police stopped the man, but he did not have a weapon, Ritzert said.
Ritzert added state police are determining whether there was a real threat. Several state police cars went to the school, but no one was hurt, he said.
“We’ve resumed normal operations at this point,” Ritzert said about 2 p.m. Wednesday.
A call to the state police in Butler was not immediately returned.
