Savisky propels Butler baseball to win

It was a good start to what Todd Erdos hopes is no repeat of 2013.

Jesse Savisky pitched four shut-out innings and Nate Kibbie went 3-for-3 at the plate as Butler’s baseball team downed Woodland Hills 7-1 Friday evening at Kelly Automotive Park.

The Golden Tornado suffered through a 2-16 campaign last year.

“It was only our second time outside since we began practicing,” said Erdos, Butler’s head coach. “I thought we performed well. Defensively, we fielded the ball well.”

The Golden Tornado broke the ice in the bottom of the third inning. Kibbie reached on an infield single and stole second base before he was driven home on Ryan Denny’s double.

Denny advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on Cory Wheeler’s sacrifice fly.

The two runs were all Butler would need, though it tacked on two more in the fifth and three in the sixth.

Savisky struck out five and walked one to earn the win.

“He threw strikes,” said Erdos. “He pitched himself out of a jam in the second inning. The bases were loaded with one out and he struck out two batters to get out of it.”

Woodland Hills was limited to six singles.

Butler is scheduled to play another non-section game at Mt. Lebanon on Monday.
