Campbell snaps SR discus record

Slippery Rock senior Emily Campbell shattered the school record in the discus with a throw of 138 feet to help the Rocket girls to a second-place finish at the Warrior Classic at Central Valley High School on a blustery Saturday afternoon.

Campbell placed first in the discus, breaking the school record by 14 feet.

She also won the shot put with a school-record toss of 41-1½ to also win that event.

Aster Chmielewski won the 100-meter hurdles with a personal-best time of 15.82 seconds and also placed fourth in the 300 hurdles with a time of 49.82.

Megan Stephenson was second in the 100-meter dash, finishing at 12.78. She also anchored the Slippery Rock 400-meter relay team that finished fifth at 53.32.

Freshman Brady Dalton was fifth in the 100 hurdles and third in the long jump.

On the boys side for Slippery Rock, Brady Kadlubek was third in the 400 and fifth in the 200. Shane Kirkwood was second in the high jump at 5-10 and anchored the 400-meter relay team to a third-place finish. Andrew Maxwell was third in the 3,200 and Josh Jones fourth in the 1,600.

Tri-State meet — Julia Baxter placed third in the high jump and Kristen Knass was fourth in the triple jump and sixth in the long jump to help the Butler girls to a sixth-place finish at the 35-team Tri-State Coaches Association Outdoor Championships at West Mifflin High School.

Claire Weiland was fourth in the pole vault, Emily Horstman fifth in the 200 and the 1,600-meter relay team of Alyssa DiPippa, Shana Hoy, Kelly Kabay and Horstman was fifth to highlight Golden Tornado finishers.

BaseballKnoch was ready to open section play. The Knights were ready to hit as well.Its first five batters reached base, Knoch produced six hits and scored eight runs in the first inning en route to a 12-2 Section 5-AAA baseball opening win over Highlands Saturday at Kelly Automotive Park.“You always wonder how nerves are going to kick in once section play begins,” Knoch coach George Bradley said. “It was good to see us come out aggressive and swinging like that.”Leadoff batter Hyte Eurich had a double, single, scored two runs and drove one in during that first frame alone. The Knights sent 13 batters to the plate in the opening inning.“We put Hyte in the leadoff spot last game and he loves it there,” Bradley said. “He asked if he could hit there again. That spot suits him.”Alex Stobert struck out five in three innigs to get the win.
