Health care workers share employee award

Brenda Campbell, left, of Chicora Medical Center, and Donna Haid of Butler Health System were named co-winners of the Employee of the Year Award Wednesday during the annual Employee Appreciation Luncheon.

FRANKLIN TWP — The Butler County Chamber of Commerce on Wednesday recognized two women who during their health care careers have contributed to the care of thousands of individuals.

The Employee of the Year Award, sponsored by Butler Health System, was presented during the chamber's 20th annual Employee Appreciation Luncheon at The Atrium.

A panel of previous award recipients selected two winners this year: Brenda Campbell of Chicora Medical Center and Donna Haid of Butler Health System.

They were nominated by their co-workers, and any employee of a Butler County business was eligible.

Campbell's story is one of pursuing opportunities and courage, Connelly said.

As the director of personal care at Chicora Medical Center, Campbell coordinates care for personal care residents and supervises the staff.

She was nominated by Nick Anderson, nursing home administrator, and Courtney Grafton, human resources director.

“Brenda's commitment, work ethic and love that she has for her residents and employees is evident to anyone who works with her for even a day,” Connelly read from the nomination form.

Campbell has worked for Quality Life Services, the Butler-based, family owned company that owns and operates Chicora Medical Center, as well as eight other nursing homes in Western Pennsylvania, for more than 14 years.

She started as a personal care aide at Sugar Creek Rest, where her attributes were recognized, leading to an opportunity to attain her license as a personal care administrator.

She served as Chicora Medical Center's personal care administrator before taking on the role of administrator of Laurel Manor in Emlenton. When it was sold, she returned to her former role at Chicora Medical Center.

Campbell also has overcome personal adversity.

In spring 2012, she suffered a seizure and was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor.

She underwent surgery and chemotherapy, but she displayed her dedication to the company and the home's residents by resuming her regular workload after only three weeks off.

Campbell now has a clean bill of health.

Fighting back tears, Campbell said, “I just couldn't get through what I've been through without my family and friends, and Quality Life Services is like a family.”

Campbell lives in Rimersburg.

Haid, clinical informatics manager for BHS, has led the organization through many changes in electronic documentation. She has been a nurse for 29 years, and she has spent the past 16 years working for BHS.

She was nominated by Mindy Dunkerly and Butler Memorial Hospital's entire electronic medical records team.

Haid during the past few years has been instrumental in developing the EMR team at the hospital that builds and revises the documentation of patient care.

Most recently, the team streamlined the electronic documentation process and ensured the hospital would meet the federal government's new requirements.

“The one thing that makes Donna stand out from most is her desire to have others succeed,” her nomination form read. “She is very hard working, devotes total dedication to her team and pushes for success.”

In accepting the award, Haid said, “I'm very shocked, and I'm very honored.

“My leadership has always said, 'You are what your team is,' and so I think if you surround yourself with a good team, then you are successful,” she said.

Haid also is active in her church, serves on the Leadership Butler County board of directors and teaches a college course on informatics. She lives in Donegal Township.

The luncheon was sponsored by The Atrium, Medure's Catering, All About Reclaimed and the Butler Eagle.
