Parole likely for man who shot at girlfriend

Plea deal includes mental treatment

A Venango Township man who fired a shotgun at his longtime girlfriend will be sentenced on a second-degree felony count of aggravated assault.

It’s likely James A. Schranner, 54, will be immediately paroled at his June 3 sentencing.

As part of an agreement with the Butler County District Attorney’s office in exchange for Schranner’s guilty plea, prosecutors agreed to recommend a 9- to-18-month prison stay followed by probation.

The plea agreement also stipulates that if Schranner completes a parole plan that includes mental health treatment before being sentenced, he can be released.

Schranner allegedly shot at Marian K. Brewer during an argument at the couple’s home on Lake Clair Lane off Jamison Road on Oct. 26.

The pair, reportedly a couple for nearly three decades, were arguing when Brewer tried to leave in her car. She said Schranner followed her outside and threw a knife at the vehicle, hitting the windshield.

Schranner went back inside the house and came out with a 12-gauge shotgun, according to court documents. He allegedly pointed the gun at Brewer while she was in the driver’s seat of the car and told her he was going to kill her.

The gunshot missed Brewer. She was not injured.

Schranner’s defense attorney Al Lindsay acknowledged that since this case began, his client has had a mental health evaluation. However, Lindsay said he could not talk about the findings because they are confidential.
