Woman missing in pond

Divers to assist in search today

SCOTT TWP, Lawrence County — Divers from Butler County this morning joined in the resumed search for a 26-year-old woman who went missing in a pond Tuesday night.

Nancy E. List of Slippery Rock Township, Lawrence County, was out with her husband fishing about 8 p.m. at a private pond secluded by woods near Countyline Road in northeastern Lawrence County near the Butler County line, state police said.

Michael W. List, 29, reported the small aluminum boat he and his wife were in capsized.

“After holding onto the boat and attempting to swim with it to shore,” according to a police report, “he saw (his wife) go under the water.”

Michael List told police that he looked for but was unable to find her. He then went to a house nearby to call for help.

A dispatcher for the Lawrence County Communications Center said the 911 call came in at 8:24 p.m.

Troopers and a state police helicopter were deployed to search for Nancy List. The Lawrence County Dive team and volunteer firefighters from Scott, Hickory and Slippery Rock townships also helped.

Authorities described the pond as five acres and 6 to 7 feet deep. The waters’ depth was not immediately known.

The search was called off about 12:30 a.m. today due to poor visibility.

Emergency crews were back at the pond about 7:30 a.m. to resume the search.

The Butler County Water Rescue Team sent six men and two inflatable boats to aid in this morning’s search. Three drivers with the Unionville Dive Team in Butler County also assisted at the site.

Firefighters from Scott and Neshannock townships also were part of today’s search.

Police at the New Castle barracks were unavailable for comment this morning.
