BlueSox keep on rolling

Ryan Hanahan and Jeff Revesz stepped to the plate in the eighth inning mired in slumps.

They both enjoyed reversing their struggles.

Both players delivered timely hits, earning the Butler BlueSox a 5-4 Prospect League victory over the Lorain County Ironmen Monday night at Kelly Automotive Park.

Hanahan, who tied the game with a triple down the third-base line off relief pitcher Kyle Michalik, entered the game hitting .083 (1 for 12).

“I think I just need to slow it down. I think I was just a little excited at first and was trying to do too much,” said Hanahan. “It was a good at-bat and I feel pretty happy with it.”

Revesz, a Grove City High School graduate, followed with a single to left field, scoring Hanahan. Revesz is batting .183.

“It gives the team confidence that if we’re down late in the innings that we can come back,” Revesz said.

Revesz’s single propelled Butler (27-18 overall, 12-5 second half) to its fourth straight win.

BlueSox manager Anthony Rebyanski was encouraged with what he saw.

“This is a big time of the year for that. We need those guys to come through,” Rebyanski said. “If we’re going to make a run at this thing, we have to have all the guys one through nine produce.”

Butler missed opportunities to capitalize early off Lorain County starter Jose Flores.

The BlueSox couldn’t come up with any hits. Flores, who allowed two hits and walked eight in five innings of work, walked Stephen Sada to start the game.

An errant pick-off attempt sent Sada to third and he scored on a sacrifice fly by Nick Sell.

The Ironmen also made errors in the second and third innings, but the BlueSox only came away with one more run.

Sell picked up his second RBI with a sacrifice fly in the third.

Lorain County (17-29, 6-13) hit BlueSox starter Brett Sullivan hard. The Ironmen finished with 10 hits, seven of which came off Sullivan.

Sullivan earned a no-decision, allowing three runs in five innings of work.

Lucas Raley belted a two-run home run in the fifth to put Lorain County ahead 3-2.

“We had a good approach against him where he had that slow curve going,” Ironmen manager Joe Rhomberg said. “They were trying to throw our timing off. ... The lefties were hitting more of fastballs and the righties were hitting the slower pitching.”

Butler High School graduate Mick Fennell responded in the bottom of the fifth, laying down a suicide squeeze to tie the game.

“We keep fighting the whole game. We don’t give up,” Revesz said. “That guy hit a home run and we fought back right away.”

Lorain County scored once off Butler relief pitcher Dave Yakopec, who earned the win, in the eighth inning. Raley singled to left and moved to third base on an error by rightfielder Collin Massanelli.

Cody Semler then hit a sacrifice fly to put Lorain County ahead 4-3.

Butler BlueSox shortstop Cody Herald, a Butler High School graduate, drew a walk to lead off the eighth.

LaNeve pinch ran for him, setting up Hanahan and Revesz to regain their confidence.
