Cop goes free

The Pittsburgh chapter of the Fraternal Order of Police answered a longtime important question: Is it ever OK for a man to hit a woman? It obviously is, if you’re a cop and the woman in question put her hand on your arm.

I am referring to the case of the female protestor Ariel Lawther, who was beat up by a cop while the act was caught on video in Pittsburgh (“Lancaster Twp. woman’s legal problems continue”, June 22, page 7).

I’ve been following this story, being sure of the outcome. The FOP found the officer was well within his rights to hold that girl down by the hair and punch her three times in the face.

Can any man hit a woman because a cop did it? People will say “well, it’s a cop.” With a taser and pepper spray and a gun and a radio, he couldn’t figure any other course of action?

Other people will say “you don’t know what it’s like!” Being a cop is the 10th most-dangerous job in this country. Loggers, steelworkers and roofers are in more dangerous professions.

This story will not go much further, I’m pretty sure, which is sad.
