Man dies in bike accident in Lancaster Twp

LANCASTER TWP — A Butler County native died Thursday night after crashing his motorcycle along the 300-block of Whitestown Road.

Township police this morning identified the man as Harry Stewart, 44, of Pittsburgh.

Harmony Fire Company Chief Neal Nanna said this morning that Stewart lost control of his Harley Davidson motorcycle around a sharp bend in the road and crashed into a field just before 10:30 p.m.

Butler County Chief Deputy Coroner John Hanovick said this morning that Stewart died of injuries to his head and chest. He was not wearing a helmet.

Nanna said Stewart was a native of the Harmony area and knew members of the volunteer fire department.

“This one hits close to home,” he said.

Hanovick said Stewart, who was driving north at the time, died instantly.

“His bike rolled over several times,” he said, adding the motorcycle had moderate damage.

Officer Dave Sitler with township police said the accident is under investigation.

He is unsure what caused the accident, but added speed is not believed to have been a factor.

“It appears he just went off the road,” he said. “There were no skid marks or anything.”

Emergency units were on scene until 12:50 a.m.
