Susan Arlene Walter

Susan Arlene Walter, 60, of Richmond, Va., formerly of Brookville, passed away quietly July 19 with family and friends by her side.

Also known as “Susie” and “Arli,” Susan was born in Brookville on Dec. 6, 1953, the daughter of Joan Beck and the late Gerald M. Walter.

She graduated from Butler High School in 1972.

She spent most of her adult years in Richmond, Va., and was looking forward to spending her twilight years among the palm trees in Florida.

Life was not always easy for her, but she met most every situation with a smile and a twinkle in her eye and always gave more than she took.

She was very proud of her three grandchildren, Forest Featherston, Gaelan Defibaugh and Winter Defibaugh, who she had been raising since they were young children.

In addition to her mother, she is survived by her daughter, Echo Featherston; her stepdaughter, Jillian Feigh; her sister, Sharon Ivory and her husband, Michael; her brothers, Richard Walter and his wife, Kim, and Gerald Walter Jr. and his wife, Suzanne; her nephews, David Capps and Devon Walter; and her nieces, Jandelyn Onufer, Brooke Walter and Kimberly West.

Susan was preceded in death by her father.

Susan was a disc jockey on radio stations WGOE, WLEE, WRAP, among others in the 1980s. Her listeners knew her as Susan St. James and she was one of the few female disc jockeys at that time. Although it was a tough industry for women then, she persevered and helped make it a bit easier for the female disc jockeys who followed. She loved music and was an active member of the Blues Society.
