Butler picks HOF class

BUTLER TWP — The 2014 induction class into the Butler High School Athletic Hall of Fame has been announced.

Shawn Bellis, Lyneil Mitchell, Annie Lowry, Mark Maier, Troy Mohney and coach Mark Farabee will swell the Hall's membership to 42 when they are inducted Sept. 5.

The induction ceremony will take place at 5 p.m. in the high school cafeteria, prior to the Golden Tornado's football home opener against Baldwin. The inductees will be honored on the field at Art Bernardi Stadium at 7 p.m.

Here is a look at the 2014 inductees:

A member of the Golden Tornado's 1991 WPIAL championship team, Bellis holds Butler boys basketball records of 1,466 points scored in a career and 29.2 points per game in one year.He also scored a school-record 47 points in one game and a record 614 points in one season.

One of the first standout wrestlers in Butler history, Mitchell compiled a 77-19 record with the Golden Tornado and became Butler's first section champion, two-time section champion, WPIAL finalist and PIAA qualifier.He went on to Gannon University and became a two-time NCAA Division II All-American. Mitchell was 98-33 at Gannon, including a record of 62-4 over his final two seasons.

A four-year starter in girls soccer at Butler, Lowry produced 84 points, second most in the program's history. She played on a pair of teams that reached the PIAA championship game.Also a four-year starter at James Madison University, Lowry went on to score 28 goals and 74 points there. Both figures rank sixth on the program's all-time list.

The first Butler boys basketball player to ever score 1,000 points, Maier finished his prep career with 1,216 points. He scored 576 points in a season and 45 points in a game against Shaler. He was a two-time team MVP.Moving on to play for Indiana (Pa.) University, Maier set an IUP record by shooting 50.8 percent from 3-point range in the 1991-92 season. He ranks among IUP's top 10 with 141 3-pointers and a 78.1 career free throw shooting percentage.

Currently the Golden Tornado's boys soccer coach, Mohney made quite an impact as a player as well. He owns school records of 37 goals in a season, 63 in a career and was a two-time all-state selection.He went on to start for four years at St. Francis College and led the team in scoring and goals for three of those seasons. He became an All-Northeast Conference selection as well.

A dedicated assistant football coach at Butler for more than 25 years, Farabee served as Golden Tornado head coach for six seasons. He coached numerous Division I full scholarship linemen.Farabee was also head boys track coach for 10 years and won WPIAL team championships in 1989 and 1990. He coached numerous WPIAL and PIAA individual champions and was on the WPIAL track committee for more than 20 years.
