Thomas Sherwin

Thomas Hayden Sherwin, 61, of Kittanning Pike, Chicora, a retired Pennsylvania State Police trooper, passed away at 11:55 a.m. Saturday at the Chicora Medical Center following a lengthy illness.

Thomas was born in Butler on Sept. 17, 1952. He was the son of the late Thomas L. and Jeanne Hayden Sherwin.

Tom was a 1970 graduate of Karns City High School and attended Slippery Rock State College.

He was a U.S. Army veteran and a graduate of the Pennsylvania State Police Academy. He was a Pennsylvania State Police trooper for 26 years and had been stationed at Warren, New Castle and Butler. He retired as a polygraph examiner from the crime unit at Troop D, Butler.

During his career with the Pennsylvania State Police, he also served as a hostage negotiator for the Special Emergency Response Team from May of 1991 to July of 2001.

Following his retirement from the Pennsylvania State Police, he owned and operated his own private investigation and polygraph examining business.

Tom was a member of the Mater Dolorosa Roman Catholic Church, Chicora, and was a founding member of the United Athletic Association (UAA), Karns City, where he had served for many years as a youth baseball coach and volunteer. He also spent many years umpiring baseball games in Butler County.

Tom is survived by his wife, Anna Marie (Rodgers) Sherwin, who he married at the Mater Dolorosa Church, Chicora, on Dec. 22, 1972. Also surviving are his son, Mark P. Sherwin and his wife, April (Wolfe), of Karns City; his two grandsons, Cole and Mason Sherwin of Karns City; his brother, Peter Sherwin and his wife, Nikki, of Lakeland, Fla; his sister, Donna Thompson and her husband, Terry, of Girard; as well as his mother-in-law, and a number of nieces, nephews, cousins, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.
