BlueSox bounce back up

Mick Fennell and the Butler BlueSox were anxious to get back on the field.

A day after Lorain County snapped the BlueSox’ franchise-best 11 game losing streak, Butler wanted to show manager Anthony Rebyanski it could rebound.

The BlueSox scored four runs in the first inning to earn a 7-2 win Tuesday night at Kelly Automotive Park.

“It’s getting us back on the right track. Getting the lead early and kind of putting on more runs from there,” Fennell said. “It was a good bounce-back win after losing the streak we had.”

Fennell, a Butler High School graduate, threw five innings and struck out three to earn the win and picked up two hits to raise his average to .303.

He also became the first Butler native to start on the mound for the BlueSox at home since Brian Warheit started the 2010 season opener.

“He’s not going to strike a lot of guys out,” Rebyanski said. “He got the five we were hoping for and the bullpen took care of the rest.”

The BlueSox (35-19 overall, 20-6 second half) took advantage of Lorain County start Ben Standiford’s early control issues.

Trailing 1-0, Fennell delivered with a one-out single.

Ryan Hanahan and Cody Herald followed with walks to load the bases.

“Early on we saw he was wild and it was good for us to take pitches and get on base,” Fennell said.

Stuart Levy then hit a towering fly ball to center field that scored Fennell and Hanahan.

Jeff Revesz followed with a sacrifice fly to stretch the lead to 4-1.

“That was his last start. I think he was tired from all the innings he threw this summer,” Ironmen manager Joe Rhomberg said of Standiford. “He was battling through some control issues and he did his best.”

Lorain County (19-35, 8-19) cut the lead in half on a unique play in the third.

With one out, Cody Semler flew out to BlueSox centerfielder Taylor Schmidt.

Schmidt relayed the ball in to first base to force out Taylor Emody, who ran when he thought Schmidt wasn’t going to catch it.

Nate Langhals, who tagged properly from third base, scored before Emody was doubled off.

Butler’s Ryan Uhl stopped Lorain County’s momentum in the bottom of the inning.

After Levy opened with a double, Uhl crushed his second home run of the year over the left-field fence to put the BlueSox ahead 6-2.

Rebyanski was pleased with how his offense responded.

“It’s what we talked about yesterday after the game,” Rebyanski said. “Yesterday was a tough one. We knew what we had offensively and everything so I was hoping everyone clicked today.”

Butler added another run in the fifth when Revesz scored when a Forrest Perron single was booted in the outfield.
