A nearly $3 million resurfacing project on Route 8 is under way. It will involve work north and south of Butler.

Deborah Casadei, spokesman for the state Department of Transportation, said crews are beginning to place equipment and post detours.

“They're mobilizing,” Casadei said.

The project will include paving Route 8 in two areas: from south of Litman Road in Butler Township to the General Richard Butler Bridge, and from Charles Street in Butler, north past the Route 422 on and off ramps, ending at Evans Road in Butler Township. Additionally, the Route 422 ramps will be paved.

The ramp from Route 422 east to Route 8 south and the ramp from Route 8 south to Route 422 east already have been closed, and a detour has been posted.

“Expect congestion and delays in that area,” Casadei said.

Once work on those ramps has been completed, work on other ramps will begin. She said the process will take a few months.

“There's a lot of work to do on the ramps,” Casadei said.

After all of the ramp projects are done, she said crews will do some work related to drainage and then the paving will start. The project will cause single-lane restrictions during the day.Casadei said drivers should give themselves extra time to get where they want to go.The work is being done by Shields Asphalt Paving of Bakerstown.Another project taking place south of Butler on Route 8 is the rehabilitation of the bridge over Butcher Run near Litman Road. The $411,000 project also includes paving.Route 8 has been reduced to one lane between Decatur Road and Hansen Avenue. That work is being done by C.H.&D. Enterprises of New Stanton.Casadei said the project is expected to be done in September.“It's moving along,” Casadei said.
