Freeport's Thimons opting for WVU

FREEPORT — Logan Thimons took five days to let it sink in.

Getting a scholarship offer and most valuable player award at a football camp at West Virginia University was a perfect situation.

The Freeport junior linebacker didn't have to think about it much.

Thimons verbally committed to play football for the Mountaineers last Saturday on Twitter.

“It was no hard decision for me to commit,” Thimons. “There's no other school that would come along I'd rather go to besides West Virginia.”

Thimons, who is 6-foot-1 and 210 pounds, also had interest from Penn State, Toledo and Lehigh.

All of those schools wanted to wait until after his junior season to make an offer.

“I was ready to make a decision and get it all behind me,” Thimons said.

That allows Thimons to turn the focus back on terrorizing opponents' offense. Thimons finished last season with 97 tackles, including 43 solo.

He also recorded 20 tackles for loss and had a sack. Freeport coach John Gaillot said Thimons' hard work didn't end when the Yellowjackets' season did.

“I always tell him that you need to take a couple days off. He lifts six or seven days a week,” Gaillot said. “He's a perfectionist. He wants to be the best. ...He's obsessed with being better than anybody, no matter where he's at.”

While at West Virginia, he enjoyed the camp. Thimons was involved with linebacker drills and liked the one-on-one battles.

It gave him an opportunity to go against high-level competition.

“I was very excited. I had no idea I'd get a MVP, let alone an offer,” Thimons said. “I was on Cloud Nine. I wanted to give it some time to think about it afterwards.”

Thimons is glad he can just focus on football.

He is excited that he found a place where he feels like they have a family atmosphere.

“A big part of why I love West Virginia is the coaching staff. Just how tight they are, not only with each other, but with their players,” Thimons said. “I feel like once I get down there, they will take care of me. They have the family atmosphere I look for and I have at Freeport.”
