Butler school will be site of shooter training

Event will be held on in-service day

BUTLER TWP — Butler High School will be the site of an active shooter field training next month, which will include blank shots fired on the campus and actors wearing makeup displaying injuries.

Butler School District staff, as well as staff from surrounding school districts, will be invited to participate at the Sept. 26 event, an in-service day. Safety personnel will also be present. Butler Assistant Superintendent Brian Slamecka said at the regular school board meeting Monday the training is to simulate what that situation would be like, and how to best prepare.

Paul Epps, school police coordinator for the district, organized the training.

The school board also heard from its solicitor, Tom King, that AK Steel is filing an appeal of its school taxes.

King said he couldn’t immediately say how much the company paid in taxes in prior years.

He said the company’s attorney has been in touch with the him. The deadline to appeal school taxes for this year is Sept. 1.

John Whitford, who is affiliated with the Cub Scouts, addressed the board during its policy committee with a proposal to revise the district’s use of school facilities policy. He would like to have pre-approved access for nonprofit youth groups, such as Boy Scouts, 4H and YMCA, to post fliers and be included in school announcements. Current policy dictates approval for each individual instance.

Whitford said he wanted to distribute fliers at Center Township Elementary School.

The board said it would consider Whitford’s request.
