Teen driver charged in fatal ATV crash

A 14-year-old boy accused in connection with a fatal all-terrain vehicle crash earlier this year in Eau Claire will be treated in the court system as a juvenile.

State police on Sunday announced that they charged the Eau Claire boy with accidents involving death and reckless endangerment. He also was cited for numerous traffic violations.

The charges and citations were filed in Butler County Juvenile Court. The Butler Eagle is not identifying the suspect due to his age.

Shane D. Scott, 20, of Eau Claire died in the April 29 crash.

Scott was riding on the back of the 2000 Yamaha Blaster that the boy was driving about 1:10 p.m. on Garner Road, police said.

The teen lost control of the ATV on the wet road as it approached Route 38. The vehicle spun into the northbound lane of the highway and collided with the International Pro Star truck tractor that was headed north.

Police said Scott was thrown off the ATV. Neither he nor the boy was wearing a helmet.

Scott was taken to Butler Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead of severe injuries.

The boy suffered only minor cuts, police said. Jesse Sayers, 31, no address given, who was driving the rig, was not hurt.

The charges of accidents involving death and recklessly endangering another person are both misdemeanors.

Police did not disclose the specific traffic violations for which the teen is cited.
