Angert's buddy replies

After reading the article about the rededication of a new memorial for Paul Angert (“Fallen war hero honored” Aug. 14, page 1), I felt a sense of pride and sadness.

You see, I am the “buddy” who joined the Marines with Paul. He asked me simply to join with him. This occurred during the spring of our senior year at Butler High School. Later a third buddy, Jim Farnen, now deceased, joined also.

Our thoughts were not of politics, communism or war, but as was noted, centered around girls, cars and music. However, the allure of becoming a Marine was and remains a powerful elixir for many young men. So off we went, the three of us to become Marines.

The buddy system meant that we would remain together during boot camp at Parris Island, S.C. After that, eventually we all found ourselves in Vietnam.

By a simple twist of fate, Paul was doing a favor for a fellow Marine, and was killed while on patrol. Those who knew him understand that this was typical of his caring, compassionate and helpful nature. Many may not be aware that Paul, as a sole surviving male heir, voluntarily signed a waiver to allow himself to be sent into combat. He had made a commitment, taken an oath and would see it through to the end. Paul had achieved his goal, he had become the Marine he had set out to be.

The rededication of a new memorial in his honor is a continuation of his positive influence on our lives. Personally, I am forever grateful and inspired by the efforts of so many who made it all possible. Thank You.
