There's no resting on laurels for Gremlins

KARNS CITY — For Karns City, it's time to turn the page.

The Gremlins do so annually, replacing personnel where they have to, shuffling players where they want to.

And they keep on winning.

KC is coming off a 12-2 season and a District 9 Class AA championship, a title that seems to be an annual occurrence.

“We don't take anything for granted around here,” veteran coach Ed Conto said. “Our three non-league games are against (Quad-A and AAA) opponents to beef up our schedule a little bit.

“There's always a challenge that comes with each season.”

The challenge this year might be replacing graduated quarterback Tyler Kepple, who threw for 1,710 yards and 28 touchdowns a year ago.

Two seniors, Cody Deal and Caleb King, are vying for the quarterback spot.

“Tyler brought plenty of leadership to the team. Nothing ever got to him and the kids rallied around him,” Conto said. “Right now, Cody and Caleb are in a dead heat at quarterback. We'll see if one emerges over the other in the scrimmages.

“I'd like to settle on one quarterback, but if it benefits the team to play both guys there, we will.”

Deal is effective on the run, creating plays outside of the box. King is more of a pure pocket passer.

Whoever steps behind center will have plenty of talent around him.

Tristan Rhoades rushed for 697 yards and nine touchdowns, averaging 11 yards per carry a year ago. Collin Dunmyre averaged 10.3 yards per carry on 20 carries a sophomore last season. Deal will see time at tailback if
