1st week full of unknown for KC

Gremlins may go with 2-QB system

KARNS CITY — It’s always a chore to get the 411 in Week 1.

Karns City football coach Ed Conto watched two scrimmage tapes on Week 1 opponent Brookville, which after a 6-5 season is replacing most of its skill position players.

“They do seem to have a whole new cast of characters,” Conto said.

The only problem is Conto has no idea who they are.

“The roster numbers don’t add up to the scrimmage jerseys,” Conto said.

That’s OK. Week 1 isn’t always about out-gameplanning the opponent, Conto said, but more about executing your own stuff.

The Gremlins plan to do that against the Raiders when the two teams kick off the season at Diehl Stadium at 7 p.m. Friday.

“There’s a lot of what-ifs in that first game,” Conto said. “It’s a little tough that first week because you watch the scrimmage film, but you don’t know if that is what they are going to run when the season starts.”

There’s no such mystery for Conto and his offense, an option attack that has operated will for more than a decade.

The only question is who will run it under center?

Cody Deal and Caleb King have been competing in camp for the starting nod. Neither one has won the job.

Or lost it.

“Both kids played well in the scrimmages,” Conto said. “We still don’t know if we are going to go with one or play both. It’s been a really tough call.”

Conto hasn’t ruled out a rotation system Friday or beyond.

For Brookville, the task is replacing all-everything back Zach Vroman, who rushed for 1,819 yards and 19 touchdowns last season.

He had 160 yards in a 42-6 loss to the Gremlins last season.

Brookville’s leading returning rusher, Jonah Sampson, had 445 yards on the ground last season.
