Butler happy to be home

Golden Tornado football looking for 1st win vs. Baldwin

BUTLER TWP — On a night which will showcase Butler's past, Golden Tornado football coach Rob Densmore hopes to provide a glimpse of the future.

Butler (0-1) hosts Baldwin (1-0) at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Art Bernardi Stadium in one more tune-up before next week's Northern Eight conference opener.

The six 2014 inductees into the Butler Area School District Athletic Hall of Fame — Shawn Bellis, Lyneil Mitchell, Annie Lowry, Mark Maier, Troy Mohney and Mark Farabee — will be presented on the field before the game.

“Our plan that night is to show the community a new mentality, show the people of Butler they have a team they can cheer for for,” Densmore said. “They have a team that won't give up, that will fight hard on every play.”

The Tornado showed as much last Friday in their opener at Altoona, playing a highly competitive final three quarters after falling behind, 21-0, in the first 10 minutes. Butler lost the game, 28-10.

But Densmore learned plenty about his team.

“I was impressed the way the kids didn't pack it in. They played with effort all night,” the coach said.

Linebackers Jeremy Hanford, Lucas Dubyak and Tim Vernick stood out defensively. Running back Damian Pickett scored Butler's lone touchdown and rushed for 67 of his 75 yards in the second half.

Pickett will likely see more action in the offensive backfield against Baldwin.

“(Other tailback) Robert Burdine starts at a corner on defense, so we'll spell him more offensively,” Densmore said. “We need to be fresh on defense and Damian showed a lot last week running the ball.

“Our secondary needs to tackle a little better. We can't allow big plays like last week.”

Altoona scored on a 65-yard pass play and a 31-yard running play. The Mountain Lions also completed a 27-yard pass and had a 27-yard run against the Tornado.

Burdine garnered 115 yards on five kickoff returns, returning three kicks for 25 yards or more.

Jamison Smith completed just two of six passes for six yards and Butler threw for but 11 yards in its season opener. Shad Stepp played much of the fourth quarter behind center.

Smith will start at quarterback Friday.

“We're not going to abandon our quarterback after one rough game,” Densmore said. “There are things we have to do better as an offensive unit in general.

“Baldwin lines up in a four-front as opposed to Altoona's five, but until we start showing we can make plays in the passing game, defenses will continue to overload the box against us.”

Densmore expects Baldwin to throw the ball often against the Tornado. Quarterback Doug Altavilla is a fourth-year starter who threw for 1,700 yards last season.

He completed 10 passes for 105 yards in last week's 10-7 win over Ambridge.

“That quarterback is very good and they're experienced on defense,” Densmore said. “Our defensive line faces a challenge this week because if that quarterback has time, he'll pick a defense apart.”
