Karns City grad dies days after ATV accident

PERRY TWP, Clarion County — A 2004 graduate of Karns City High School has died from injuries he sustained in an ATV accident last weekend.

Jeremy Slaugenhoup, 28, of St. Petersburg was pronounced dead Wednesday at the Golden Living Care Center in Clarion, three days after the Polaris RZR side-by-side he was a passenger in rolled over along Keefer Road.

State police in Clarion said the vehicle, driven by Kyle Bailey, 22, of Parker, was traveling on Keefer Road about 2:45 a.m. Sept. 7 when he lost control going around a curve.

The vehicle went off a side of the road and struck a stump, causing it to roll a number of times, police said.

Slaugenhoup, who was not wearing a seat belt, was thrown from the vehicle and suffered severe injuries.

Clarion County Coroner Terry Shaffer said Friday that Slaugenhoup died of head injuries.

An autopsy was done by the Allegheny County Medical Examiner.

Shaffer said Slaugenhoup was taken to a UPMC hospital. After surgery, doctors felt he would not survive and he was taken off life-support.

He was taken to the Golden Living Care Center, where he died hours later.

Slaugenhoup served the U.S. Marine Corps on active duty from 2004 through 2010.

He was employed by Universal Forest Products as a floor supervisor at the Emlenton area operation.

Bailey, who was wearing a seat belt, also had severe injuries, police said.

State police had no update on their initial report of the accident and are still investigating.
