2 alleged drug dealers in Butler County Prison

Separate cases investigated

Two alleged drug dealers are jailed following their arrests this week in unrelated cases.

Charged with felony drug trafficking are Rayford A. Allen, 52, of Butler and Dean R. Potts, 53, no known address. Both suspects are in Butler County Prison on $75,000 bail each.

Their arrests followed separate investigations by the Butler County Drug Task Force.

Officers recently targeted Allen’s home in the Flowers Apartment building on West Brady Street in Butler for suspected drug activity, said county Detective Tim Fennell, who heads the task force.

A police informant twice this week allegedly bought heroin at the apartment. Based on those sales, Fennell said, a search warrant was obtained for the apartment.

Task force and Butler police officers found Allen at home when they served the warrant at 6:25 a.m. Tuesday. The search turned up 20 stamp bags of suspected heroin and a digital scale, according to court documents.

Allen was arraigned on felony charges of delivery of a controlled substance and possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance and a misdemeanor charge of drug possession.

Potts was arrested a day earlier stemming from an earlier drug investigation.

In that case, he sold $100 worth of crack cocaine to a police informant in a controlled drug buy April 21 on South Chestnut Street in Butler, court documents said. The alleged deal was set up by way of telephone.

Potts unwittingly showed up Monday at the Butler police station, where he was arrested.

He was arraigned on charges of delivery of a controlled substance, possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance and criminal use of a communication facility, all felonies.

Additionally, he is charged with possession of a controlled substance, a misdemeanor.

Potts also has six other criminal cases — five for misdemeanor possession of drugs or drug paraphernalia — pending in Butler County Court.
