IN BRIEF

FRANKLIN — A woman has been convicted of third-degree murder for shooting her live-in boyfriend while she was packing up to move out.

Tina Louise Shaffer, 39, of Plum Township was convicted Thursday after a Venango County jury deliberated less than three hours.

State police in Franklin say Shaffer's adult son called 911 to report the shooting about 6:20 p.m. March 4, minutes after the victim, Lloyd “Buddy” Shontz Jr. himself twice called 911 as the couple argued, before hanging up.

Shaffer had told police the gun went off during a struggle that Shontz either handed her the gun and said, “Shoot me if that's what you want” or was aiming the gun at himself when he asked her to pull the trigger.

Shaffer faces a maximum sentence of 20 to 40 years in prison Dec. 9.
