Bucs' power spread in record numbers

Neil Walker rounds the bases after his 21st home run of the year clears the Clemente Wall on Roberto Clemente Day Wednesday night. Walker is one of a record nine Pirates to hit 10 or more home runs this season.

PITTSBURGH — Some teams have power hitters. The Pittsburgh Pirates simply have power.

When Ike Davis drilled a knuckleball over the center field fence in the fifth inning Wednesday night, he launched the 2014 Bucs into history.

It was Davis 10th homer as a Pirate this season and he became the ninth member of the team to reach double digits in long balls this year. No other team in the 128-year history of the Pirates can claim that feat.

“It's pretty impressive, really,” Davis said. “Not every player on that list is a regular. There's some part-time players in there, some bench guys.

“It shows the importance of getting opportunities and doing something with them. This team does that.”

Andrew McCutchen leads the Bucs with 23 home runs. Neil Walker has 21. Pedro Alvarez has hit 18, Josh Harrison and Starling Marte have 13, Travis Snider and Jordy Mercer 11 each, Davis and Russell Martin 10 each.

Walker, McCutchen, Alvarez, Marte and Martin have all spent time on the disabled list. Snider and Mercer reached double digits in homers for the first time in their careers.

Harrison battled to make the 25-man roster during spring training. Now he's in contention for a batting title.

“It's just fun to see these guys do their work in the box,” manager Clint Hurdle said.

Walker, a Pine-Richlandgraduate, has collected 21 homers and 70 RBI despite missing time because of an appendectomy and bad back during the year. His 21st homer was struck Wednesday night, clearing the 21-feet high Clemente wall in right field on Roberto Clemente Night.

“Yeah, there's some significance there,” Walker said, smiling. ”I didn't think about it at the time I hit it, but it struck a nerve with me later.

“Everyone knows what Roberto Clemente means to this franchise. Everyone knows about the legacy surrounding him.”

And everyone knows the Pirates can hit the ball.

Going into Thursday night's series finale with the Red Sox, the Pirates' 146 home runs ranked third in the league behind Colorado (173) and the Chicago Cubs (149) in the National League.

Their 648 runs scored trailed only Coloado's 700. Their .261 team batting average was behind only the Rockies' .275 and the Dodgers' .263.

“It's grinding out at bats and making things happen,” Hurdle said. “This is an unselfish bunch. They're here to do their part for the team.”

Walker agreed.

“No one cares who gets the credit or who the hero is on a given night, as long as it happens,” he said. “Everyone goes to the plate intent on having a good at bat.

“That's the only way you can produce numbers like this.”

The 2007 Pirates had eight players hit at least 10 home runs. That list featured Jason Bay and Adam LaRoche with 21, Xavier Nady with 20, Jose Bautista 15, Nate McLouth 13, Jack Wilson 12, Ronnie Paulino and Freddy Sanchez 11.

Walker is one of only two second basemen in the majors — Seattle's Robinson Cano the other — to produce at least 20 doubles and 10 homers in each of the past five seasons.

“We've played in close games all year and every base counts,” Davis said. “That's the approach. That's why we're in the position we're in.”

“If we play our best ball like we have been in recent games, we'll get in,” Hurdle said in regard to the playoffs.
