Trojans dominant in conference win

Cardinal Wuerl runs roughshod over Brentwood

MCCANDLESS TWP — Keith Wells led the rest of the Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic defense in a non-stop parade to Brentwood quarterback Connor McWilliams.

Challenged by the coaching staff to get after the passer, Wells responded with three sacks in a 55-20 Black Hills Conference win Friday night at Stone Field in North Park.

“Coach really wanted us to work hard this week,” Wells said. “We didn't have any sacks the past few weeks. I took practice very hard and it paid off.”

Senior defensive linemen Joe Sadler reaped the biggest reward from the pressure.

Sadler returned a fumble for a 36-yard touchdown with 10 minutes, 42 seconds remaining in the third quarter to put the Trojans (4-0, 4-0) up 42-7.

Jake Sauder sacked McWilliams and popped the ball loose.

Sadler, who is 6-foot-0, 220 pounds, laughed when asked if he thought he could score.

“I mean, I felt like I was getting in,” Sadler said. “ I saw my guys behind me real fast and I knew I was going.”

McWilliams passed for 148 yards and Brentwood (2-2, 1-2) finished with 218 yards of total offense. On the Spartans' first possession, McWilliams was intercepted by Brennan Sefick.

North Catholic quickly capitalized, taking a 6-0 lead on a 32-yard touchdown run by Jerome Turner with 8:16 left in the first quarter.

“They bring a whole lot of guys and we had some young, inexperienced guys playing on the left side of the line,” Brentwood coach Kevin Kissel said. “I knew we would have a hard time throwing the ball. We had a hard time running the ball. This is a good team.”

Turner led the Trojans with 97 yards rushing on eight carries. P.J. Fulmore scored three touchdowns and finished with 68 yards rushing.

Leading 18-0 with Brentwood driving, Wells help drive the Spartans away. On second-and-11 from Trojan 31, he sacked McWilliams for a 7-yard loss.

The next play, Wells teamed with Sauder to bring him down again.

“I time the ball snap well,” Wells said. “Once I start using my hands, I know my strength will take care of me.”

McWilliams threw his lone touchdown pass, an 88-yard strike to Patrick Carr, who had a game-high 114 yards, that cut the lead to 28-7 with 3:13 left before halftime.

Quarterback Adam Sharlow helped North Catholic make sure Brentwood didn't get closer before halftime.

He found Fulmore for a 10-yard pass with 11.3 second left before halftime to put the Trojans up 35-7. Sharlow passed for a season-high 148 yards.

“We haven't had a chance to do it,” Ravenstahl said. “We had an opportunity tonight. I thought the passing game worked really well.”

Mario Latronica and Dominic Seventi also scored touchdowns for North Catholic.

Sadler was pleased that the Trojans met the demand for pressure on the quarterback.

“We came into the game knowing we need to get after the quarterback,” Sadler said. “We knew he was good and we put our heads forward and went at him all night.”
