BlueSox pick new manager

Former player, assistant coach Radwan takes job

Jason Radwan can’t get enough of Butler — and vice versa.

After two years as the starting second baseman for the Butler BlueSox and two years as an assistant coach with the team, the St. Bonaventure University graduate is now manager of the Prospect League franchise.

Radwan replaces Anthony Rebyanski — who recently accepted an assistant baseball coaching position at California (Pa.) University — and becomes the third manager in franchise history. Jason Wuerfel managed the team during its first two seasons.

Rebyanski was 131-101 in four years as BlueSox skipper, including a franchise-best 40-20 campaign in 2014 that ended with the team’s first playoff appearance.

“From the time I decided to take the California job last July, Jason was a no-brainer for this job,” Rebyanski said. “He knows the way this organization does things and he wants to be a coach.”

Radwan is now a graduate student at St. Bonaventure studying school counseling. He is a graduate assistant coach for the Bonnies’ womens’ softball team.

“I was interested in this (BlueSox) job right away,” Radwan said. “The transition will be good and knowing Rabi will be available to help me is a big plus.”

Rebyanski will serve as Director of Player Development for the BlueSox. Teaming with Radwan, the duo already have 20 collegiate players verbally committed to join next year’s team.

“I still want to see a championship come to Butler and I want to be a part of it,” Rebyanski said.

Radwan wants to become a collegiate coach down the road, or a high school baseball coach while working as a counselor.

“Those are options. I definitely want to be a coach and this job is a good stepping stone in that regard,” Radwan said.

“The BlueSox have given me opportunities as a player and as a coach. Butler has been great to me. I want to return the favor.”

BlueSox managing partner William “Wink” Robinson said in a prepared statement: “(Radwan’s) familiarity with our approach to operating a Prospect League team is certainly an asset on which we based our decision.

“More importantly, though, are Jason’s positive ties to our community that he developed over the past four years. He will be an excellent role model to our ballplayers and a respectable ambassador for the BlueSox.”
