Flood stories hit home

I was taken by surprise and humbly reminded when the Butler Eagle published several articles commemorating the 10th anniversary of Hurricane Ivan.

My father, Herbert Statzer was devastated by Ivan. At that time, he was already physically challenged, living with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, but Ivan took his home and most of his belongings. Ultimately, Ivan took his independence.

Several family members and friends helped salvage what we could of his belongings and keepsakes. We worked tirelessly for weeks cleaning and sorting through items.

We felt defeated, but he never did. My father was in awe of the humanity and support from the community. His loss could not be measured against the outpouring of hope and generosity.

We were the people who benefited from the meals at Grace Church, the household donations, volunteered labor, laundering services, and government assistance.

My father passed away two years ago this June. The efforts of the community in response to Ivan were, and remained, a high point of his life. His home was demolished and his land became a section of the Harmony canoe launch — a place I frequent and enjoy for its beauty, sanctury and memories.

I want my family, friends Sue Casker, Marilyn Weyman, Cathy Rape, Jeff Smith, Tom Haus and others, Grace Church and all volunteers who had a hand in our recovery to know that their efforts were appreciated and will never be forgotten.

You were the lifeline in our tragedy.
