SV girls handle Pine-Richland, 3-0

Raider soccer team outscoring opponents 50-2 this season

JACKSON TWP — Seneca Valley senior midfielder Emily Wagner snagged a goal and a nice bouquet of flowers Monday night at NexTier Stadium.

Her goal came with 1 minute, 59 seconds left in the first half of a 3-0 Section 2-AAA win over Pine-Richland.

The flowers came after the game, when she was asked to homecoming.

“It was a surprise,” Wagner said. “It was a nice surprise.”

There were few surprises on the field for Seneca Valley (10-0, 8-0).

The Raiders played a nearly flawless first half against a Rams team that had given Seneca Valley its toughest test of the season.

The Raiders, who have outscored their opponents 50-2, won their first game against Pine-Richland 1-0 Sept. 5 on the road.

“We knew they were going to come back hard because we only beat them 1-0,” Wagner said. “We knew they were going to come back better than before, so we were prepared to take on whatever came at us.”

Seneca Valley gained the upper hand by being aggressive early.

Raiders junior midfielder Sarah Anderson got in on net in the fourth minute and launched a shot that was deflected away by Leah Roth.

The ball went to Kelsey O'Connor, who flipped the ball toward the net and Anderson headed it off a Pine-Richland defender for a goal.

“I think we were more put together tonight,” Anderson said. “We were on our home turf, had a game plan and weren't freaked out like we were in the first game.”

Wagner nearly gave the Raiders a second goal four minutes later.

She put the ball in the back of the net off a corner kick by Hart, but it was negated by an offsides call.

Hart gave Seneca Valley some insurance when she scored on a long strike off another corner kick in the 14th minute.

Raiders coach Dave Sylvester didn't feel Seneca Valley did anything different in the second game.

“We put two more in,” Sylvester joked. “I mean, there were no surprises on their end for us. I don't think there were any surprises on our end for them. We do what we try to do and see if the other team stops us.”

Pine-Richland (8-2, 5-2) struggled to reach the attacking third in the first half.

The Rams only had one shot on net, a long shot by Amanda Kalin that didn't trouble Raiders keeper Jessica Neill.

“They threw a lot of numbers in and played their system well,” Rams coach Jodi Chmielewski said.

The Rams generated more chances in the second half, finishing with seven shots.

“I was unhappy with how we closed the game out,” Sylvester said. “We have to be better. Everybody's giving us our best.”
