Man's body found

His death ruled suicide

SPRINGFIELD TWP, Mercer County — A man’s decomposed body with numerous stab-type wounds was found Monday on a gas well site near the Mercer-Butler County line, state police said.

Investigators suspect Kevin E. Moore, 47, of Mount Union, Huntingdon County, killed himself by plunging a knife into his heart.

Mount Union police had been looking for Moore since Sept. 10 when they got an arrest warrant for him on charges he had sex with a child.

“He knew that case was coming,” Lt. Eric Hermick of the Butler barracks said of Moore.

Authorities believe Moore fled his home county soon after the alleged crime Sept. 8. But it was not known when he drove to Mercer County.

A gas well attendant stumbled upon the man’s body about 11:10 a.m. Monday while making a check of the facility on Smith Road in Springfield Township, police said.

Moore’s body was lying face up outside his Kia. Next to the body was a knife.

An autopsy determined Moore had been dead for about three weeks. His death was ruled a suicide.

Police said a suicide note was found in his car’s glove box.

“There was a puncture wound and hesitation marks on his upper left chest,” Hermick said.

Those injuries, authorities said, indicated Moore was having difficulty stabbing himself with the knife before he managed to penetrate his chest with it.

Police noted the gas well sight is secluded, which likely hid the remains. But investigators said they did not know why it took so long for the facility to be inspected.
