Special Olympics event set at SRU

Athletes will compete Sunday

SLIPPERY ROCK — More than 300 Special Olympics Pennsylvania athletes will travel to Slippery Rock University for the daylong annual Western Fall Sectional on Sunday.

The athletes will represent 14 Western Pennsylvania programs and compete in team and individual events in bocce, long-distance walking/running, powerlifting, soccer and volleyball.

More than 120 coaches and 400 volunteers from SRU and the surrounding community are expected to help. They were recruited by a student committee headed by Logan Steigerwalt, an SRU marketing major from Allentown.

“As a freshman last year, I was able to see the impact Special Olympics had on the athletes and volunteers here on campus. I wanted to get involved in such an inspiring organization, so I volunteered to help organize this year’s event,” Steigerwalt said.

Special Olympics Pennsylvania provides year-round training and competition in 22 Olympic-type sports to more than 20,000 children and adults with intellectual disabilities or closely related developmental disabilities. For more information, visit www.specialolympicspa.org.

The sectional’s opening ceremonies are at 9:15 a.m. Sunday in the Aebersold Student Recreation Center, with competition beginning at 10 a.m.

Events in soccer and team volleyball will serve as qualifiers for state Fall Festival at Villanova University in November.

Spectators are welcome.
