Freeport looks to steal one from 'Fab 3'

FREEPORT — John Gaillot understands the Freeport football team has a big opportunity this Friday.

Knocking off undefeated Highlands at 7 p.m. at Swartz Field would allow the Yellowjackets to escape the four-way tie for third place in the Allegheny Conference.

Lose and Freeport will need to find a few more wins — and have Shady Side Academy stumble — to earn a playoff bid.

The Yellowjackets are in a three-game stretch against the “Fab 3” as Gaillot calls them.

Freeport lost to Kittanning 63-34 last week and will play Highlands (5-0, 5-0) and Apollo-Ridge (4-1, 4-1) the next two weeks.

“If things don't work out and we can't steal one of those games it will be tough,” Gaillot said. “I've been really pleased with the effort and overall performance of our team.”

Freeport's biggest area of concern for its game against the Rams is keeping the clock moving. Nine of the Yellowjackets' 11 starters play on both sides of the ball.

After throwing 37 times against the Wildcats last week, Gaillot wants to find a nice mix of passing and running.

“With our offense, we don't designate who's going to get the ball. That's based on progression,” Gaillot said. “They all have to run hard on every play. ... All those DBs running those routes on offense, it wasn't a lack of effort, it was exhaustion.”

He doesn't want to pull the reins back too much on Andrew Romanchak, who leads all Butler County area passers with 885 yards. Dylan Hochbein also leads the county in receiving yards with 365 and has caught four touchdown passes.

“This year, they present a problem because they throw the ball extremely well,” Highlands coach Sam Albert said. “The QB puts the ball on the money every time. The receivers are fast kids and run great routes. The linemen outweigh us up front.”

The Rams are led by quarterback Bradyen Thimons, who's thrown for 303 yards and five touchdowns this season.

At running back, Elijah Jackson will give Highlands some serious punch. He's averaging 9.8 yards per carry and has 627 yards on the season.

“We're hoping for a win,” Gaillot said. “It will be tough because they are so well-balanced. Coach Albert does a good job and they are aggressive on defense.”
