Rockets and Lancers prepare for Round 3

Teams squared off in the postseason the last 2 years

SLIPPERY ROCK — The Slippery Rock High football team is very well acquainted with General McLane.

The two teams met in the District 10 Class AAA playoffs the last two seasons with the Lancers winning both — 46-42 in a wild game in 2012 and 35-15 last season.

Those games were at Slippery Rock University.

This time, the Rockets will welcome General McLane to their renovated high school stadium for a 7 p.m. kickoff Friday night.

“They are a great program and we had some battles the last two years,” said Slippery Rock coach Brendan Hathaway. “We respect what they do. These are the teams you want to play to get better.”

Slippery Rock (6-0) dropped down to Class AA this season and General McLane (4-2) has made the jump to quad-A.

They are still the familiar Lancers, though, Hathaway said.

“It's amazing how almost every time you watch them on film, they are the same,” Hathaway said. “They are hard to stop on offense and aggressive on defense.”

Slippery Rock has used the same formula for success.

The Rockets rolled up 459 yards on the ground in a 55-20 rout at Warren Friday and also limited the Dragons to 233 yards — most coming in the second half.

“That's certainly the goal. We want to run the ball and play good defense,” Hathaway said. “When we've had trouble moving the ball, the defense has really played well and our special teams has played well.”

The Lancers have struggled in their new region this season with just one win and losses to Central Tech and McDowell.

General McLane still has some potency in its offense behind quarterback Kyle Sult, who has thrown for 786 yards and 11 touchdowns this season. He also leads the Lancers in rushing with 321 yards.

The Rockets also have some potency — and depth — in their attack.

And they've received contributions from deep down their roster and from players at different positions.

Camren Neal, a starter at tackle when the season started, filled in at center when Colten Raabe was recovering from a hand injury and anchored the line.

Ken Anderson, who scored the first touchdown at the Rockets' renovated stadium, has had big moments on both offense and defense.

And Trenton Porter got a chance to get involved more in the offense against Warren and didn't disappoint with 107 yards and two touchdowns on just seven carries.

“I think it just speaks to how everyone is buying into the system to play unselfishly,” Hathaway said. “When guys go out and when other guys come in, there is no letdown.”

Unselfishness isn't an easy sell these days, but Hathaway and his staff have been able to instill that into the Rockets.

“I think it's the type of kids we have,” Hathaway said. “They do it on the field and they do it in the classroom. We have a bunch of guys who have the bring-your-lunch-pail-to-work mentality. Half of that, I think, is what the coaches preach to them and the other half is how they are raised at home. We have really good kids here.”
