Clarion too much for Union, 47-12

RIMERSBURG — Union junior Cole Morris looked exhausted after the Golden Knights' 47-12 KSAC Small Division loss to Clarion Saturday at Vidunas Field.

With only 16 players on the field by the game's end, all of Union's players had a reason to be tired.

Morris didn't want to make excuses. He was more disappointed the Knights couldn't hold onto their first-half momentum.

Clarion led 7-6 at halftime. Union came up empty in three trips inside the red zone after scoring its first touchdown.

“Having 16 kids does hurt us, but we have to play a full game and we played one half tonight,” Morris said.

Clarion rolled up 508 yards of total offense. The Bobcats played without starting quarterback Brendan Miller and linebacker Destin Strauser.

Clarion never trailed, scoring five plays in.

A 41-yard run by Jacob Troutman set the Bobcats (6-1, 4-0) up at the Union 19. Two plays later, Ian Corbett scored on an 11-yard run. Corbett finished with 269 yards rushing and four touchdowns.

Corbett scored on runs of 60 and 70 yards in the third and fourth quarter, respectively, to stretch the lead to 33-6.

“We just ran out of gas and weren't able to get off blocks,” Union coach Dave Louder said.

Knights quarterback Lane Cicciarelli and Morris had the offense moving. Cicciarelli threw for 311 yards, with Morris catching 15 passes for 192 yards.

Morris finished a yard short of breaking Union's record for receiving yards in a game, which was set by Mike Conner against East Brady in 1964.

“They were playing 20 yards off, so we went for the short stuff,” Morris said.

The Knights cut the lead to 7-6 when Morris caught a 17-yard touchdown pass from Cicciarelli.

Union turned the ball over on downs three times in the redzone.

“We changed to a pressure defense and our middle backer (Colton Rapp) did a heck of a job filling in,” Clarion coach Larry Wiser said. “Him and Troutman were coming with inside pressure. Those were keys and not giving (Cicciarelli) time to throw.”

Union (2-5, 2-2) forced two turnovers in the first half. Knights defensive lineman Casey Confer closed a strong first-half defensive performance by sacking Clarion quarterback Taylor Smith.

“We were doing our jobs and not worrying about ourselves,” Confer said. “We knew if we did something wrong, the next guy would be there.”

Union's euphoria was short lived. Josh Kriebel intercepted a Cicciarelli pass after halftime to set the Bobcats up at the Union 34.

Four plays later, Ethan Straffin caught a 24-yard touchdown pass from Smith to extend the lead to 14-6. It was the first of 33 answered points for Clarion.

Tyler Wiser had Union's other score, catching a 49-yard touchdown pass in the fourth quarter.
