Butler boys upset P-T, 3-1

Tornado soccer earns 1st playoff win since 2008, plays Seneca Valley next

HARRISON CITY — Watching Butler boys soccer senior midfielder Chris Fiorina's two fiery, passionate celebrations in the final 15 minutes was almost unbelievable for senior keeper Adam Voelker.

Winning a WPIAL Class AAA playoff game was always the goal. Being on the field for the 12th-seeded Golden Tornado's 3-1 first-round upset of fifth-seeded Penn-Trafford Monday night at Warrior Stadium was like a dream.

“It's pretty amazing, actually. Coming from a senior, we've been here four years and have gotten to the playoffs twice,” Voelker said. “It's crazy winning the first-round game. It's something we haven't done in four years.”

Winning a playoff game is something Butler, which will play Seneca Valley in the quarterfinals Thursday at a site and time to be determined, hadn't done in some time.

The Golden Tornado's last playoff win was a 2-0 win over Penn-Trafford in 2008.

Butler (11-6-2) missed the playoffs four straight years before returning in 2013.

“I'm obviously ecstatic. It's a great honor for these guys,” Golden Tornado coach Troy Mohney said. “The second half of the season we've been playing well. ... We got a couple nice combinations and got it in the back of the net. I'm happy for these guys.”

Butler's offensive output shocked the Warriors (12-3-1), who had only allowed six goals in the regular season.

Penn-Trafford struck first, scoring 12 minutes in when Andrew Miller booted a cross from Joe Scalesi off a free kick into the net.

Fiorina said the Golden Tornado didn't panic.

“We kept it the same, we stuck to our game-plan and fought hard,” Fiorina said.

The Warriors missed two more scoring opportunities in the first half. Galen Kreutzberger swung two crosses in front of Voelker that skipped over a lunging Trevor Momeyer.

Voelker, who finished with seven saves, also made key stops in the 33rd and 52nd minutes.

“We just didn't get the bounces tonight,” Penn-Trafford Jeff Nese said. “We struggled throughout the whole night. They started imposing their will through the air, winning 50-50 balls.”

Butler's Paul James tied the game with 12:07 left in the first half. James received a pass around 30 yards out and split two defenders before slotting it into the net.

“I was thinking I should take those guys on and get us tied,” James said. “I didn't think I could, but I was confident about it.”

The second half was stagnant offensively, with both teams jostling for position. Logan Angert and Anthony Werth set up Fiorina's two goals. He got through for his first with 14:29 remaining.

After scoring, Fiorina turned, put up his hands and yelled before his teammates joined him in the celebration.

It was a sense of euphoria he hadn't felt playing the sport before.

“Never for soccer, this is great,” Fiorina said.

That is, until he scored again nine minutes later.

It was like a dream, giving Butler the playoff win Voelker had hoped for.

“Chris' goal gave us so much motivation and momentum to put the game away,” Voelker said.
