Abbott steps down as school principal

Kellie Abbott

CRANBERRY TWP — Kellie Abbott has stepped down from her position as principal of Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic High School this week.

Math teacher Jeff Tonini said the staff was told about the change on Monday by the Rev. Charles Bober, school president.

“We were just called into meeting and read a letter that said she resigned for personal reasons,” Tonini said.

The school appointed Patrice Hughes as interim principal to replace her, according to its website.

Hughes was at the school on Tuesday, Tonini said.

The school secretary said Wednesday Bober would not comment on the matter and questions had to be directed to the Diocese of Pittsburgh.

Abbott was hired in June 2013 to take over the Catholic high school in Pittsburgh.

A year later she oversaw the hiring of 10 new teachers and the transition to the new high school in Cranberry Township.

The new school opened on Sept. 2 and has an enrollment of 293 in its first year.
