Show features resident artists

JEFFERSON TWP — Concordia Haven will host a resident art show from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Haven II Art Studio on the second floor at 148 Marwood Road.

The show will feature more than 80 pieces created by seven Concordia independent living and personal care residents.

The artists featured range in age from 88 to 92, with several of the residents having taken art classes for more than 10 years.

The resident/artists include Joan Bowen at Lund Care Center; Eleanor Hanna, Mary Simmons and Loena Zitzman at Haven III; and Rev. Ken Hoener, Laird Kroh and Flo Parker at Haven II.

Artwork will be for sale.

Maridon hosts film series

The Maridon Museum is hosting a fall film series installment today.

The film “Brick Lane” will be presented by Ken Harris at 6 p.m. at the museum at 322 N. McKean St.

In “Brick Lane,” a young Bangladeshi woman arrives in London in the 1980s, leaving behind her beloved sister and home for an arranged marriage.

The final installment in the film series will be “The Future of Ghosts” at 6 p.m. Nov. 6, presented by Sunita Peacock.

Conductor goes to schools

Butler County Symphony Orchestra music director and conductor Matthew Kraemer will be visiting Butler School District elementary schools Monday through Oct. 30.

The elementary schools include Broad Street, Emily Brittain, Center Township, Oakland Township, McQuistion, Connoquenessing, Northwest, Center Avenue, Meridian, Clearfield and Summit.

“The ABC’s of Symphonies,” a program designed by Kraemer, will feature 15 members of the Butler symphony and includes lesson plans and curriculum for teachers.

The orchestra’s concert “The Magical Music of Disney” will be at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 1 in the Butler Intermediate High School auditorium.

‘Tarzan’ comes to Succop stage

BUTLER TWP — Sing Hosanna! will present the musical “Tarzan” in November.

The story is adapted from “Tarzan of the Apes” by Edgar Rice Burroughs and originally produced on Broadway by Disney Theatrical Productions.

Curtain is at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 14 and 15 and at 2 p.m. Nov. 16 at the Succop Theater at Butler County Community College.

All seats are $15 and are not reserved. Tickets are available at May’s Music Shoppe.

Filmmaker visits SRU

SLIPPERY ROCK — Gloria Rolando, an award-winning Cuban documentary filmmaker, will visit Slippery Rock University Oct. 30 and 31, to offer three free presentations and screen two of her films.

Rolando’s opening lecture will include an introduction and overview of her work at 12:30 p.m. Oct. 30 in the Advanced Technology and Science Hall. She will screen and discuss her film “Raices de Mi Corazon/Roots of My Heart,” at 7 p.m. Oct. 30 in the Smith Student Center Theater.

The third presentation at 3 p.m. Oct. 31 in 111 Spotts World Culture Building will be a screening and discussion of her 2014 film “Reembarque/Re-embark.”

Brew festival benefits library

GIBSONIA — The inaugural Autumn Wine and Brew Fest, hosted by the Mars Public Library, will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday at Cider House, One Treesdale Commons.

Wine and craft beer will be provided by Deer Creek Winery and North Country Brewing. There will be music, hors d’oeuvres and a Chinese auction.

Museum hosts holiday market

HARMONY — The Harmony Museum’s Christmas Market, WeihnachtsMarkt, returns Nov. 8 and 9 as the annual fundraising festival celebrating the community’s German heritage.

Market participants include specialty vendors, demonstrations by quilters and weavers, and tastings of locally produced wine and beer.

The museum’s Christmas season model railroad displays, entertainment and unlimited horse-drawn wagon rides are included in the price of admission: $7 for adults, $5 for senior citizens, $3 for students, and free for children younger than 6.

WeihnachtsMarkt hours are 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Nov. 8 and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 9.

A Christmas carol sing will take place at 5:30 p.m. Nov. 8 with the Seneca Valley Intermediate High School Girls Chorus as the live Christmas tree outside the museum is lighted.

Symphony gives concert

PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Youth Symphony Orchestra will give a free concert at 2:30 p.m. Nov. 23 at Heinz Hall, 600 Penn Ave. Though the concert is free, tickets are required and may be downloaded at pyso.org.

High schooler in musical

PITTSBURGH — Freeport High School ninth grader Victoria Huston will be among the Pittsburgh CLO Academy students performing the musical “Anything Goes” Nov. 15 at the New Hazlett Theater, 6 Allegheny East.

Curtain is at 2 and 7 p.m.
