Butler County's great daily newspaper

Can't argue with that

Over the long haul, writing political letters can be a humbling experience. One is foolish to expect plaudits in the aftermath of writing researched letters, but only harsh retaliation. Its purpose is legitimate debate, gathering facts to support one’s case. But, let’s pause for a moment and review some of the more frivolous comments from previous letters to the editor to the Butler Eagle:

• Sept. 9, 2014: “The only change President Obama made is more dependency on the government and fewer rights for us.”

• Oct. 9, 2012: “Obama has put a lot of effort and money into hiding his past from the electorate, because he has a lot to hide.”

• Nov. 7, 2013: “There was no high unemployment during George W. Bush’s presidency.”

• Dec. 15, 2013: “I hope the Pope will address how the left is exploiting his statements about the evils of poverty.”

• Oct. 25, 2013: “Many say Democrats won the government shutdown. Republicans showed they have a spine in trying to help the country.”

Their participation in the political process shows these involved Americans are easily swayed by media gobbledygook and deceitful politicians, for one just can’t make this stuff up.

So, as a result of a misinformed public, a writer is chastised by a clueless respondent, with little more than irrational nonsense to support an opposing view. Or, you encounter an indiscreet egomaniac in a crowded public place, trashing your character for your political beliefs.

It’s now time to discard my political ammo and step away from the madding crowd, not necessarily to avoid the fray, but as the saying goes, “The more things change, the more they remain the same.”

It’s more gratifying that I cherish the fond memories of those early years, as a child of the Great Depression and the Second World War. A time when the middle-class of the Greatest Generation captured the American Dream, contributing and thriving in a more friendly, gentler country, for decades to come, once upon a time in America.
