Mayor to consider residential parking

Tag system may deter commuters

The city is looking at parking issues beyond the Centre City project.

Mayor Tom Donaldson said at Thursday night’s city council meeting he hopes to explore regulating residential parking ordinance within two blocks of Main Street and in other neighborhoods in the city.

“We have people coming from outside the city, parking in our neighborhoods, then walking to work,” Donaldson said. “This is something we need to address.”

Donaldson said the city needs to prevent commuters from taking parking spots from city residents.

Donaldson said he is considering a sticker that residents would place on their vehicles. Cars without a sticker would be subject to a parking ticket if parked in front of a residence.

He said signs also could be used to deter illegal parkers.

Donaldson cited neighborhoods near Center Avenue and Wayne Street as causes for concern.

Residential parking would be monitored by the city’s parking violation monitors Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

“I think that would really help the residents out,” he said.

The mayor said the city would use common sense if someone from outside of town was cited while visiting residents at their homes.

“We just want to stop people who work in the city from parking in front of residents’ homes,” he said.

Donaldson said he hopes to present a formal motion at next month’s council meeting.
