SR seniors propel Rockets past Corry

SLIPPERY ROCK — The Slippery Rock football team took another step toward a second straight undefeated regular season with a 55-6 win over Corry Friday night.

“It was a great senior night,” Slippery Rock head coach Brendan Hathaway said. “They just really deserved it. Those seniors have never lost on this field. For them to win one last time on a field they helped build was really special.”

The Rockets set the tone from the start. Slippery Rock senior Brady Kadlubek returned the opening kickoff 87 yards for a touchdown.

Slippery Rock continued its assault in the first quarter, scoring three more touchdowns. Senior Jared McDowell punched in a touchdown from the one-yard line, shortly followed by a 47-yard interception return from senior Blake Heller.

Senior Brandon McKnight closed the first quarter with a 3-yard touchdown run.

“It was a total team effort today,” Hathaway said. “Whenever you can have about 17 guys carry the ball then you know the line is doing their job. It's always good to have a lot of guys that can carry the ball.”

The second quarter was more of the same thing, as McDowell returned an interception 11 yards for his second touchdown.

Junior Trenton Porter had a big second quarter, breaking free for a 43-yard touchdown run, followed by an 85-yard run to the end zone two minutes later.

“The line really stepped up for us,” Porter said. “I don't usually get a lot of playing time, but it was nice to get out there and help.”

The Beavers got on the scoreboard in the third quarter when junior Tagen Drayer rushed for a 1-yard touchdown, cutting the lead to 48-6.

Slippery Rock got in the end zone one final time when senior Chris Ketterer broke free for a 15-yard touchdown run.

“It's just one of those years, it's like when one thing goes bad then everything goes bad,” Corry coach Adam Walstrom said. “Down five starters, playing freshman and sophomores is difficult when you're playing with the eighth-ranked team in the state and we just didn't have enough horses to run with them.”
