Benka, Maxwell continue rivalry

Grove City senior Aaron Benka and Slippery Rock senior Andrew Maxwell continued their rivalry at the Class AA District Cross Country Championships Saturday at Sharon.

Maxwell won at a race last week, but Benka finished in 16 minutes, 43 seconds at districts, beating Maxwell, who placed second by 13 seconds.

It was part of a dominant day for the Eagles. Grove City finished with 38 points as a team, and had three finishers in the top seven and five in the top 15.

The Eagles won the team title, finishing well ahead of second place Harbor Creek, which earned 113 points.

John Paul Depew (fourth), Braydon Pyle (sixth), Dillon McConnell (13th) and Ryan Budnik (14th) also finished in the top five.

The Eagles and Maxwell will both advance to the PIAA meet Saturday at the Parkview cross country course in Hershey.

Slippery Rock's Tabitha Donaldson qualified by finishing 15th in 21:05 on the girls' side.

Catie Jaskowak (14th, 21:04) and Olivia Lowe (17th, 21:07) moved on from Grove City.

District 9 championships — Moniteau's Samantha Hall and Gabriella Stewart both earned bids to the Class A PIAA cross country meet.

Hall finished in 12th place at the District 9 championships with a time of 22:36.4. Stewart finished 16th in 22:54.10.

The Slippery Rock boys soccer team earned a first-round bye for the District 10 Class AA playoffs.The Rockets will play Wednesday at a site and time to be determined. Slippery Rock's girls team will open the first round against Villa Marie at 5 p.m. today at Fairview High School.
