Chamber to host career fair Friday

CRANBERRY TWP — The Pittsburgh North Regional Chamber of Commerce will hold its third annual career fair Friday.

Jim Boltz, the executive director of the chamber, said he expects as many as 500 people to attend the event at the Four Points Sheraton North in Cranberry Township.

Nearly 100 employers and other vendors will be at the event, which aims at connecting residents to companies. It will run from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Both of those numbers are an increase from last year, when about 350 job-seekers came out to talk to about 65 employers at the career fair.

Boltz said the free event is a great opportunity for anyone who is either looking for a new job or looking to expand their network of professional contacts.

“It gives people exposure with local companies that have jobs or, even if they don't have openings, it gives them contacts that could be helpful in the future,” Boltz said.

He said an added feature this year will make it easier for participants to apply to jobs there.

The chamber will have computers in the hotel's ballroom where prospective applicants can apply for jobs. A computer coach will be there to answer questions or help applicants.

While the career fair provides ample opportunities for job seekers, Boltz added that it's mutually beneficial for companies looking to fill positions.

“They have a great chance to help educate local job seekers about what their company is all about,” he said. “It's all about networking and this really gives both parties a much easier way to do that within a large group of people.”

Megan Julius, the director of marketing and events for the chamber, added that the career fair will include several educational breakout sessions where job seekers will meet with an expert to talk about resume building skills, interview skills and other matters.

“Just coming for those educational sessions alone would be worth your time,” she said. “It's something that can help you stand out from the crowd in the future.”

Julius added that the chamber will raffle off several one-on-one opportunities with career advisers.
