Symphony musicians take their show on the road

The Butler County Symphony Orchestra performed Wednesday for students at Meridian Elementary School. Orchestra members have been visiting each of the Butler School District's 11 elementaries. Today they are to stop at Clearfield and Summit.

BUTLER TWP — Meridian Elementary School students excitedly bounced their heads and snapped their fingers Wednesday afternoon during a music-filled assembly, taking in a performance with a 15-member group from the Butler Symphony Orchestra.

Some of the younger students even played pretend instruments in their seats and imitated the conductor’s motions with their fingers.

That kind of enthusiasm for music also may convince them to pick up an instrument of their own when they’re older.

“That’s what sparks it for later on,” said Tim Sisinni, principal.

There was not only a performance, but an introduction to musical categories and concepts, contrasting fast and slow, high and low, loud and soft. Woodwind, brass, string and percussion instruments were introduced to students.

The musicians took turns playing as groups, and then all played together to show the full effect of working together.

They wrapped up with a musical rendition of the Dr. Seuss classic “Green Eggs and Ham” and the fast-paced and fun “Can Can.”

It was not only a great experience for aspiring musicians, but also provided some encouragement for older students who are beginning to play instruments of their own.

“I do percussion, so I thought it was cool to see all of the different instruments,” said Noah Diamond, 11, a sixth grader.

He hopes to be a part of the Butler High School Marching Band in a few years, and after that, maybe even part of the Ohio State University drum line.

Ten-year-old Alano DiCerbo and 11-year-old Sydney Rensel also enjoyed the assembly. Alano is a member of the chorus, and Sydney is learning to play the violin.

“If you keep practicing, you can see how great you can be,” Sisinni told them.

It also was a refreshing experience for the performers.

“It’s been phenomenal for the musicians and the students alike,” said Matthew Kraemer, orchestra music director.

Orchestra members have kept busy this week, visiting each of the school district’s 11 elementary schools for a half-hour performance. Those assemblies wind down today at Clearfield and Summit elementary schools.

This is the first year the symphony has done a tour of all 11 elementaries, and Kraemer hopes it becomes a tradition.

The entire 70-member symphony will have a Disney-themed performance at Butler Intermediate High School at 7:30 p.m. Saturday. Tickets are $5 for students and $20 for adults.
