Plenty of offense

Karns City's Tyler Dunn pulls in a pass and spins around Punxsutawney's Ryan Jones for extra yards at Diehl Stadium last week in a 43-18 win. The Gremlins' offense might have to put up a slew of points to keep pace with DuBois Friday.

KARNS CITY — Get the calculator ready.

Karns City and DuBois Area may rack up a whole lot of points and plenty of yardage when they meet in a mutual District 9 regular season finale at 7 p.m. Friday in DuBois.

The host Beavers, a Quad-A team sporting a 7-2 record, average 55 points per game. The unbeaten Class AA Gremlins (9-0) are scoring 45 points a contest.

“They are going to make some plays on us,” KC coach Ed Conto said. “It's going to be up to us to push our buttons, too. We have to find a way to score one more point than they do.”

DuBois has scored 50 or more points in all of its victories. Its losses are 36-35 to Conneaut and 51-21 to Cathedral Prep.

“I give Karns City credit for playing us, being a double-A school, but there's not as big a difference in our enrollments as people might think,” DuBois coach Frank Varischetti said.

“We're the smallest Quad-A school in the state. In terms of football program vs. football program, this should be a very good game.”

Gabe French, a third-year starter at quarterback, is 6-foot-3, 221 pounds and has thrown for 3,032 yards, 37 touchdowns and seven interceptions. He's got some big targets in 6-foot-5 Cole Kriner (38 catches-895 yards-11 TDs), 6-2 Dante Dawson (42-796-11) and 6-3 Kevin Foley (27-573-7).

“We're facing a tall task here, pardon the pun,” Conto said.

The Beavers can run the ball as well. Devin Clark has 119 carries for 865 yards and 13 touchdowns, French 68 carries for 331 yards and seven scores.

“We played Central Tech because we wanted to face a strong running attack like an Aliquippa,” Conto said. “We wanted to play DuBois to face somebody that can throw the ball like South Fayette.

“You prepare for possibilities. That's was this is all about. They've got a big stadium up there our kids will be walking into. We're excited about it.”

The Gremlins will be playing without linebacker and leading tackler Cody Deal, who is out with a broken rib. Cornerback-flanker Tyler Dunn has an injured shoulder and is expected to miss the game.

Receiver-defensive back Ethan Conto may return from injury and play Friday night.

“Those are some key names for us and DuBois has a 75-player roster,” Coach Conto said. “They have a lot more depth than us.

“We play a lot of kids, so other guys are ready to step in and play. Some may have to carry a bigger load than they're accustomed to doing.”

Varischetti sports a 29-12 record in his fourth year at DuBois. He previously coached at Brockway.

“Karns City has athletes and they play hard on every snap,” Varischetti said. “When I was at Brockway, I wished we could play them every year because they always have such a great team.”

With Deal sidelined, Caleb King takes all the snaps at quarterback for the Gremlins. He has thrown for 903 yards, seven touchdowns and only one interception.

Tristan Rhoades has 559 yards and nine TDs rushing, seven catches for 229 yards. Collin Dunmyre has rushed for 484 yards and nine TDs.

Logan Moroney leads the team with 22 catches for 277 yards.

DuBois has three linebackers — Adam Bankovich, Wes Russell and Noah Shaffer — with between 50 and 56 tackles.

“We play a 44 and our defensive line has done a good job of freeing up our linebackers,” Varischetti said. “We've got some active kids back there.”

Conto said the Beavers' line “averages 260 pounds and thetve got two 6-5 kids up front.

“But DuBois plays a finesse game. They're not big hitters. We feel like this is an interesting match-up for us and it's worth taking a shot.”
