Freeport spikers bow in semi's

Ford City shocked the top-seeded Freeport girls volleyball team 3-1 in the WPIAL Class AA volleyball semifinals Thursday night.

The Yellowjackets, who are 20-1, were the defending WPIAL champions.

Zoe Pawlak led Freeport with 31 kills, while Jess Kelly finished with 13.

A-C Valley 3, Port Allegany 1 — The Falcons punched their ticket to the District 9 Class A semifinals with a 25-19, 24-26, 25-18, 25-11 win.

A-C Valley (15-2) will take on No. 1 seed Elk County Catholic at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Marys.

Kameron Patterson threw for 248 yards and three touchdowns and also rushed for one as Grove City High closed out the season with a 44-26 win over Northgate at Forker Field Thursday night.Jesse Hodge, Donny Sevin and Jared Graham had receiving TDs for the Eagles (2-8).Tanner Lucido rushed for 223 yards and a touchdown.Cordell Sanders also had a TD run.Grove City closed out the season with two straight wins.“That was a great way to end the year,” said Grove City coach Sam Mowrey. “I'm just happy for the kids. They earned it. A lot of groups after an 0-8 start would have packed it in for the season. I don't think I left a practice this year thinking it was a bad practice.”

Seneca Valley added an impressive win to its early-season resume.Jared Hulbert scored a short-handed goal 8 minutes, 29 seconds into the third period to help the Raiders defeat defending PIHL Class AAA champion Bethel Park, 3-2, at Bethel Park BladeRunners.Dylan Sloat made 22 stops in net to pick up the win for the Raiders (4-1). Noah Watkiss and Parker Faix also scored for Seneca Valley.Thomas Jefferson 5, Freeport 4 — Tommy Kimmick scored a goal 2 minutes, 12 seconds into overtime to help the Jaguars beat the Yellowjackets in a non-conference matchup at the Belmont Ice Complex.Michael Frazetta scored a hat trick for Freeport (2-3).Robert Reichenbaugh score the Yellowjacket's other goal.Mars 10, South Fayette 3 — Paul Maust and Beau Heakins both registered six points and a hat trick to help the Planets roll to a non-conference win at Warrendale BladeRunners.Tyler Spreng made 17 saves for Mars (5-1).
