Unbeaten Raiders survive in OT

O'Connor nets game-winner against P-T in fi rst round of PIAA girls soccer tourney

WEXFORD — Seneca Valley vs. Penn-Trafford, the sequel.

It didn't go to penalty kicks like the original.

It didn't disappoint, either.

Senior midfielder Kelsey O'Connor scored her second goal of the game with 1:07 left in the first overtime period Tuesday night, handing the Raiders a 2-1 victory in a first-round PIAA Class AAA girls soccer game at North Allegheny's Newman Stadium.

The Raiders (23-0) defeated the Warriors on penalty kicks in the WPIAL semifinals eight days earlier.

“Win the WPIAL and our reward is we get to turn around and play these guys again,” SV coach Dave Sylvester. “I don't like that. I don't like that all.”

P-T coach Rick Nese wasn't crazy about the idea, either.

“It's a shame these two teams had to meet again so early in the (state) tournament,” he said. “Yeah, there's something wrong about that.”

Regardless, they put on a classic.

Neither team scored in the first half, though both had chances.

SV's Emily Wagner headed a shot just wide and Caroline Miller headed a ball just over the crossbar less than five minutes into the game.

The Raiders' Alicia Hart drilled a direct kick a little over the crossbar from 40 yards out. O'Connor hooked a shot from a bad angle on the right side of the net that sailed through the goal mouth with 12 minutes left in the half.

“Somebody had to get a goal at some point,” O'Connor said.

Penn-Trafford (19-3-1) had its best scoring opportunity midway through the half.

Italia Bondi delivered a cross to Taylor Karan, who was wide open just 15 yards in front of SV goalkeeper Jessica Neill.

Neill cradled the shot safely into her stomach — the Warriors' lone shot on net in the half.

“We used a different format tonight from the first time we played them,” Nese said. “We started three forwards instead of two and we did generate more opportunities.”

The Warriors took a 1-0 lead with 24:19 left in regulation when Biondi arched a shot from 28 yards outthat deftly landed behind Neill, into the net.

The goal was the 31st of the season — third in the playoffs — for the University of Toledo recruit.

Seneca Valley found itself playing from behind for only the second time this season.

The goal was just the eighth allowed by the Raiders on the campaign.

“Our girls responded well,” Sylvester said. “I think they got a little mad, actually. They hate to lose.

“I was in the process of changing our formation to get more offense ... We were in transition that way when Kelsey got the tying goal. Then we switched back to the way we were right away.”

O'Connor, one of four double-digit goal scorers on the Raider roster this year, knocked home her own rebound with 17:14 remaining.

“The first shot I took was clean, but went right into her (P-T freshman goalkeeper Victoria Anderson). “Luckily, it bounced right back to me.

“Sometimes you need the ball to bounce your way.”

With 10:25 left in the first overtime, Penn-Trafford had its best chances to win. Warrior forwards took two hard shots from just outside the box, but SV defenders blocked both of them.

The Raiders applied all of the pressure from there.

“We felt like we were taking control. It didn't matter who scored the goal,” O'Connor said. “Someone just had to knock one in.”

Hart took direct kicks from 41, 50 and 30 yards out in the final six minutes to no avail, the latter kick coming with 3:10 left.

She took a corner kick with 1:50 left that was deflected away, but never cleared.

O'Connor gained possession of the ball, got a step on the defender and delivered the game-winner with 1:07 on the clock.

“I'd been working on a chop shot and decided to try one there,” she said.

SV will play District 1 runner-up Central Bucks East — a 2-1 winner over Ephrata — in the next round Saturday at a site and time to be determined.

“I don't know a thing about (Central Bucks East),” Sylvester said. “I'm just glad we survived this. Penn-Trafford is good. They have speed to the outside and play good defense.

“They look a lot like us.”

The Raiders had an 8-4 edge in shots on goal and a 3-2 advantage in corner kicks, including the only corner kick in overtime.
