Kaitlyn McKenzie scored two second half goals as the Mars girls soccer team routed District 9 champion Clearfield, 5-0, in the first round of the PIAA Class AA playoffs at DuBois Area High School Tuesday night.

Mars was up 1-0 at the half on a goal by Dillon Wright.

Sabrina Edwards and Wright also scored in the second half as the Planets blew the match open.

Mars was coming off a loss in the WPIAL Class AA championship match.

“The biggest thing for us was we learned from our mistakes and didn't make the same ones again,” said Mars coach Blair Gerlach. “We're a young team and not that experienced, but we were able to turn a negative into a positive. That shows we are developing.”

Mars (19-4) will play District 10 champion Villa Maria (18-1-1) at 3 p.m. Saturday at Slippery Rock High School.
