BC3 nets 1st win in hoops

Alex Alvarez scored 49 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to help the Butler County Community College men’s basketball team earn its first win of the season with a 101-57 win over the Geneva junior varsity team Wednesday night at BC3.

Knoch High School graduate Austin Miller also scored 20 points for the Pioneers (1-4), while Dom Pusateri had 10 assists.

Gannon 64, Slippery Rock University 51 — The Rock had its game at the Hammermill Center tied at 26 at the half, but struggled to knock down shots late in its PSAC West Division opener.

SRU (2-1, 0-1) shot 32.6 percent (15-of-46) from the field.

Frank Holloway finished with a double-double, 15 points and 10 boards, for The Rock.

Cornelius Brown was the only other player to score in double figures (11 points) for SRU.

The Rock returns to action Saturday, hosting Pitt-Johnstown at Morrow Field House.

Women’s BasketballThe Slippery Rock University basketball team fell on the road to No. 13 nationally-ranked Gannon 69-48 in a PSAC West matchup at the Hammermill Center.D’Asia Chambers led The Rock (1-1, 0-1) with 17 points and 14 rebounds. Freshman forward Mallory Heinle also added 10 points for SRU.The Rock shot 30 percent (17-of-56) from the floor.SRU hosts Pitt-Johnstown Saturday at Morrow Field House.Point Park JV 68, Butler County Community College 46 — Butler High School graduate Lauren Bresnahan scored 17 points and added 10 rebounds to register a double-double for the Pioneers.BC3 (0-5) had an early lead, but couldn’t sustain its momentum.Miranda Williams added 12 points and nine rebounds, while Ashley Brehm had 10 points and seven assists for the Pioneers.
